Double Layered Canoe Platter
Keum Sun Lee is a self-taught potter and ceramicist who established SHIM & LEE with her late husband, potter Sang-Sool Shim. Drawing on traditional Korean techniques from the 10th and 15th centuries, they developed their own glazes and colours to give their creations a contemporary feel.
Their work ranges from small ceramic pieces to large-scale forms, each entirely handmade. Hand-carved details and carefully applied colour reflect the exceptional skill, patience and concentration involved in creating every piece.
Together, Lee and Shim participated in more than 40 exhibitions in New Zealand and abroad, including Austria, Croatia and Korea. Their awards include the Premier Award at the Portage Ceramic Awards, two People’s Choice Awards, and First Prize and a Merit Award at the Greater Auckland Art Awards and Exhibition. Their works are held in the collections of the Portage Licensing Trust and Kapfenberg, Austria.
